Solus Scientific™ Solutions was founded in July 2009 to commercialise the work of Professor Bill Stimson of Strathclyde University, who has developed a range of innovations in diagnostics and microbiological testing. Solus brings together the innovations and technical expertise of Prof. Stimson with the management and technology commercialisation experience of Stewart Wallace and Anglo Scientific, a private equity firm specialising in building technology start-ups. The Solus senior management team comprises of the following members:
Douglas Dundonald, Executive Chairman
Co-founder and Director of Anglo Scientific and numerous other technology companies including Chairman of Radiophysics Solutions. Previously an Executive Director of Anglo Pacific Group Plc, and when an active member of the House of Lords, Douggie held a position on the council of the Parliamentary Information Technology Committee. Douggie has successfully established two investment organisations, in addition to running his family's investment company.
Ray Wakefield, Chief Executive
Ray initially trained as a microbiology/veterinary laboratory technician with a large poultry group of companies finishing as laboratory senior in the veterinary department before progressing into sales. Ray's sales career developed through a number of territory sales positions and into product specialist roles both in blood transfusion and food microbiology and ultimately into sales management and setting up and managing a subsidiary business in the food diagnostic sector. Ray is currently Managing Director of RayAl Limited, a subsidiary of Solus Scientific.
Prof. William Stimson, Chief Scientific Officer
Over 30 years developing diagnostic systems and immunoassay antibodies. Bill held the patent for sandwich ELISA in 1972 (now in worldwide use), produced first human monoclonal antibody in 1978 and was first to use a human antibody for immunoscintigraphy of a pancreatic cancer patient in 1988. 21 patents, 200+ scientific publications, Chairman of the Institute of Nanotechnology and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. First-line consultant to Akzo Nobel for 19 years and Rhone Poulenc Agrochemie for 13 years, and Research Director Emeritus at Viragen for 7 years. Initiated Immunology Department at Strathclyde University in 1984 and took it to RAE Five Star status in 1996.
Alastair McCulloch, Director
Alastair trained as a medical microbiologist at the University of Edinburgh. He then followed a career in sales, sales management and as a product specialist within the clinical and biotechnology/life science research business sectors before becoming one of the founders of RayAl Ltd in 2002. Al is currently a Director of RayAl Limited, a subsidiary of Solus Scientific.Stewart Wallace, Director
An experienced entrepreneur with 15 years proven experience in venture capital backed technology companies, business development situations and university spin-outs. Stewart sold his own manufacturing company in 2006 after 10 successful years and devotes most of his time running his own management consultancy business, Kip Point Consultancy Ltd. Stewart has previously undertaken interim CEO roles, built management teams and closed investment rounds. He has an honours degree in Applied Physics and Mathematics from The University of Strathclyde and a Diploma in Executive Coaching & Mentoring.
Fred Edenius, Director
A principal with Anglo Scientific and previously with UBS Investment Bank's Technology Mergers & Acquisitions group in San Francisco. Fred has a wide variety of experience across different technology sectors and geographies, having worked with and advised public and private companies in the US, the UK and India. Honours degree in Computer Science from Harvard University and MBA from London Business School.
Dawn Watson, Finance Manager
Experienced Financial Director of both high potential start-ups and established businesses across a broad range of industries. Following her Bacc at Glasgow University Dawn became a qualified CA with Ernst & Young and after many years in industry is now working with her own company FinStra Ltd providing strategic and financial support to a variety of companies. Managing Director of Innvotec. 25+ years in early stage venture capital. Previously head of technology investment at Baillie Gifford. Experience as financial director of venture backed companies. Qualified chartered accountant and FSA registered. Also a business angel with personal investments in a number of early stage private companies. Innvotec is Scottish Enterprises Co-Investment partner and John is SE’s board representative.
